Optical filters are a great way to optimize photos while shooting. The use of optical filters provides me with the optimal basis to then, if necessary, get the most out of my photos with image processing.
Basically, I use the following filters for the respective applications:
- Polarizing filters to enhance blue skies, reduce haze, and reduce reflections on non-metallic surfaces
- Neutral density filters (ND filters) to extend exposure times in landscape photography or to blur out traffic/people in city photography. Also for using a wide-open aperture in portrait photography with plenty of light in the studio or outdoors
- Graduated neutral density filters (GND filters) in landscape photography to balance contrasts, especially when there is little structure in the sky, or during sunrises and sunsets
- Astro-clear filters for filtering out light pollution
