Photographer Jannik Wagner once again demonstrated his skills during a creative outdoor shoot with model Sharmika in an abandoned hotel near Kaiserslautern. He made use of the mystical location and the atmosphere of a sandstone cellar by candlelight.

Variation in Set-Up with the LUMIS U-Light and the LUMIS Compact RGB

In the first set-up, Wagner used the RGB colors of the LUMIS Compact RGB to create a warm orange. The small light was placed inside a lantern to perfectly imitate the glow of a candle. The light was removed in post-processing using Photoshop. The LUMIS U-Light was used as ambient light, which, with its various settings, created a cold light, thus providing a contrast to the warm light of the LUMIS Compact RGB. The cold ambient light and the contrast it generated created more structure in the background and perfectly highlighted the wall.

Breathtaking Reflections thanks to Ring Light Replacement!

In the second set-up, Wagner used the LUMIS U-Light as a kind of ring light replacement. The different setting options of the LUMIS U-Light allowed various reflections to be created in the model's eyes. The LUMIS Compact RGB was used as ambient light in this set-up. The creative possibility of producing blue light allowed the glass brick window in the background to be ideally highlighted. The blue perfectly accentuated the regular pattern of the joints, and the image gained a modern touch.

Reflections in the eyes thanks to LUMIS U-Light

To illustrate the reflections in the eyes, Wagner created close-up sections of the eye area, which exude an impressive intensity. In the eyes, the rectangular shape of the U-Light is clearly visible, providing a great alternative to the familiar reflection of a ring light.

Spontaneity through flexible use of compact
LED lights

On the way home from the setting, the photographer couldn't resist and took advantage of a spontaneous moment to illustrate the easy handling of the LUMIS series. The car, whose windows had lightly fogged up due to the rainy weather, served as the set-up. The portable LED lights were placed on the hood and once diagonally behind the model. The LUMIS U-Light shone from the front with its cold white and illuminated the oncoming cars. Thanks to the fold-out stands, the light could be perfectly placed and secured on the windshield wiper. In contrast, the LUMIS Compact RGB created a warm light from behind to emphasize the fogged-up window and create a beautiful rim light in the model's hair and face.

Note: Please note that the LED lights are not waterproof. Caution is advised when using them near water!

Settings and Camera Options

Wagner photographed all set-ups with the Sony A7R3 and the Sigma Art 35mm f/1.4 DG DN lens. The first set-up in the sandstone cellar required an ISO value of 160 and an exposure time of 1/100 second. In the second shooting section, the photographer increased the ISO value to 200, but kept the aperture and exposure time the same. For the spontaneous photos in the car, Wagner used an f/4.0 aperture with ISO 12800 and an exposure time of 1/100 second.
