Tripod Cleaning: How to clean a camera tripod?

Good tripods are often exposed to strong natural influences. For avid photographers, they are used in saltwater, mud, or sand, for example – and must therefore be cleaned regularly after each of these uses so that you can enjoy them for as long as possible.

But how do you clean your tripod properly? This question is regularly asked of our professional service at Rollei.

That's why we recorded an explanatory video with Sigbert Laakmann, who works in product management at Rollei. In the video, he demonstrates the cleaning process using our Rollei Lion Rock Traveler as an example. Below the video, you will find a summary of the procedure for cleaning a tripod.

Disassembling the tripod:

Loosen the Allen screw, unscrew the head from the tripod. Once the tripod head is unscrewed, unscrew the base plate.
Slightly unscrew the damping on the center column, unscrew the hook on the center column.
Completely remove the center column, then completely unscrew the damping.
Disassemble the tripod legs (first remove the cover caps for the spikes).
Loosen the legs by unscrewing the quick-release screws.
Carefully remove the tripod stopper plates, then pull off the end cap; proceed this way with each leg.

Cleaning the tripod:

Clean the tripod in a water bath. First in soapy water, then in clear water. Soak all parts except the tripod head and clean with a sponge and round brushes.
Caution: The tripod head itself is lubricated internally and should not be fully submerged in water. To clean the head, use a sponge, then rinse with clear water.
Then rinse each part and place it in clear water until clean.
Check each leg to ensure it is free of dirt; the center column can also be cleaned this way.
Remove any salt crusts from the locking elements and sleeves for the spikes; clean the stopper plates with a round brush.
Pull out the tripod hook, check if the spring mechanism is movable.
During cleaning, also look into the leg segments, check for crust, clean.
Important!!! Absolutely dry individual parts before reassembling.

Assembling the tripod:

Start with the second segment of the tripod leg. The elevation of the stopper plates must snap into the corresponding hole of the tripod leg to hold it. If it doesn't go in easily, rotate the part of the tripod leg, then attach all legs.
Only attach the leg to the body when all parts of a leg are assembled.
Spray silicone spray onto paper, wipe down the legs with it.
Apply acid-free grease to the threads.
Place spike caps on the spikes.
Insert the center column. The groove must slide in easily and smoothly.
Screw in the hook from below, then just attach the plate for the ball head at the top, where the screw is inserted and tightened.
Place the ball head on the thread.
