Macro photography: Small mushrooms, big world

Many mushrooms grow directly on the forest floor. Use a tripod with a reversible center column or very short legs to get as close as possible to your subject.

Absolute stillness is especially important for longer exposure times. Set up your tripod firmly, press it lightly into the ground, and use a remote shutter release or self-timer to avoid camera shake.

Not every tripod is equally practical in the forest. Look for flexible legs or ball heads so you can work stably even on uneven ground—whether among roots, moss, or leaves.

Place LED lights on the sides or from behind to add depth to mushrooms and details. Small angle changes can make a big difference in light and shadow.

Macro photos are sensitive to overly bright light. Use dimmers or diffusers to soften the light and gently highlight textures.

Small LEDs or handy lamps can be positioned flexibly – ideal for optimally illuminating even difficult perspectives in the forest or on uneven ground.

Avoid camera shake during long exposures or extreme close-ups by using the remote shutter release. This ensures the image remains razor-sharp.
